Cockatiels

Cockatiels can be pricey but very much worth it.

So my new found fascination with birds has drawn me to cockatiels. Why? You ask good question, I don’t really know. I mean besides my husbands obvious love for them I had no reason to notice them. I had a parrot once when I was little and I learned the hard way that it was a very tropical bird and it doesn’t like to be frozen to death. Literally (it was a total accident I promise people). I loved that bird even though I hadn’t gotten a chance to teach to talk yet. Well back to the cockatiels, who might I add are apart of the parrot family, can also talk very clearly too and they get to be at least 25 years old. That’s with being very well kept and healthy of course. Hint: no ice cold rooms or right up under an air vent, just saying. They come from Australia originally and are known for their mellow nature and easy care. No one told me that. They are also known to grow to be from 11 inches long to about 14 inches long, if they get any longer than we might need to get a bigger cage. They aren’t supposed to eat fruit seeds, avocados and chocolate or drink alcohol and caffeine. I read somewhere to make sure they have clean, fresh, filtered and chlorine-free water changed daily. Okay so I understand all of the above except for the “chlorine-free” part because why anyone would put chlorine in their birds water or any pets water for that matter is baffling to me. Anyway don’t forget to change their water. Also you should keep their food and water above the perch to prevent contamination. While doing my research I found out that birds can get arthritis. Now that was totally something new to me. I mean I knew dogs and cats could get it but birds. Anyway it’s good to get various sizes of perches to avoid this problem and as they ‘exercise’ the birds feet. It’s good to know that they live so long because they easily bond with their human companions and will follow them any and everywhere. You’ll never be alone again. Not saying you were already alone just that if you were then if you got a cockatiel you wouldn’t be anymore that’s all.
