It’s a worldwide war; the war between the dog lovers and the cat lovers. Each side thinks that their choice is the best possible choice. However, you just have to be around cats for a little while to be swayed to their side. Cats exude an air of superiority that makes those who share their lives with them feel privileged. They are the most lovable of creatures, when they want to be. They have a mind of their own that you want to respect rather than to subdue. The dog lovers may disagree, but here are my 10 reasons why cats are better than dogs.
Image via Wikipedia
- Cats use a litter box. You don’t have to get up at 6am to walk them in all types of weather. They also do not take much training in using a litter box as kittens. You just sit them in the litter box and they know what to do.
- Cats are independent. You can leave a cat alone for a few days and they will not be traumatized. Just make sure you leave enough dry food and water available to them.
- Cats wash themselves. While you may have to wash them very occasionally if they get into something dirty, cats do a good job of keeping themselves clean. Their self cleaning does lead to hairballs but there are ways to prevent hairballs.
- Cats are quieter. A cat’s meow is usually much quieter than a dogs bark. They will not wake you up in the middle of the night barking at anything that moves.
- Cats are more sophisticated looking than dogs. Cats are sleek and almost always attractive. They give off a regal air when they sit.
- Cats don’t usually beg for food. They might not always be happy with the food they are given but they won’t usually sit at the dining room table and beg for scraps.
- Cats purr. There is nothing like a cat’s purr to make you feel good. It has been proven that a cat’s purr can lower your blood pressure and your stress levels. There are also studies that suggest that cats use their purring to manipulate humans.
- Cats rub against you to show affection. They show affection by rubbing their heads against your legs or by giving you a gentle head butt.
- Cats don’t expect to be taken for walks. Most cats will not tolerate being put on a leash and will not usually cooperate when you try to take them for a walk anyway.
- Cats can live their entire lives indoors. While many people let their cats roam free, many others, especially in cities, keep their cats indoors at all times and the cats are perfectly happy and content.
I hope you agree with my assessment. If you have an alternate view, why not write an article about it. Or comment below and let me know.

I have a cat and my boyfriend has a cat and he used to have a dog. His vote would be for dogs I guess who experienced both kinds but just because he finds dogs more loyal and cats a bit more unpredictable. It is not that he doesn’t like cats but he is more comfortable I think with a dog like most people. For me each cat is another real character and I find them adorable. But what you say at the beginning is very true, that this is an age old question and I think one with an answer as unpredictable as a cat:)

I am also more into cats than dogs. Still, there is one thing that you can do with (relatively big) dogs that is hard to do with cats, and this is hugging them with all of your body. what a feeling…

Both cats and dogs have their own lovely little habits, I have a 10 month old kitten and know that your points are true, they are so naughty though and will keep you on your toes for sure but they still act like celebrities with their own crazy personalities at times.

Yeah I’m with Somsri. You can come home from the worst day of your life and a dog will love you no matter what. I like cats too, but they can pretty much take you or leave you. Dogs are incredibly loyal, loving animals. Like I said, I like cats and dogs, but I’m on the dog side of the argument.
Fun piece though.

I have never had cats myself, and have always been a dog lover. I have a dog that is cat sized, so she almost seems like a cat, except the purring! When it comes to purring, I have 2 gerbils!
However, you do have some very valid points. My neighbor had 2 cats a few years ago (both of which have passed) and I would take care of them when they were gone. They were very loving cats and I really enjoyed their company. So I can totally see where you’re coming from.
Although I agree with the above comment that it seems to be easier to bond with a dog because they are more dependent on your company.
Either way, great article

Thanks for commenting. I think I have the best of both worlds. My cat runs to greet me every day when I come home and he does like company. He is an ocicat, and sometimes people say that breed are the most dog-like.

Lovely article. Growing up on a farm, I have had the best of both worlds when it comes to cats and dogs. I positively adore cats. We live in the city (Perth) at the moment and we have two cats – a ‘pensioner’ (13 years) and an adolesant (nearly 12 months old). Both of them are part fancy cat, part moggy. My 13 year old, she is my little girl – she gives the best headbutts (bunt) and is extremely affectionate. I love how independant she can be. Even though I love cats heaps, we are thinking becoming a Guide Dog Pupper Raiser in the next 18 months – I love a good cause!

Some of your points are dependent on the personality of the cat. For example, my cat prefers to be completely independent, does not rub against anyone for affection, and likes to spend most of her time outdoors. She is also more likely to wake me up at night than my dog, because she scratches and bats at the door until I let her outside. She also never used a litter box, going outside instead. In general, I like cats more, but because of the personalities of my pets, I have a better bond with my dog.

If I had not had dogs (two small ones) before having cats I might have preferred them, but the dogs came first and I miss them. I did, however, find it a lot easier to bond with my cats, (three) than I expected and as we both grew older our temperments grew more alike. I find it easier to ignore cats though because of their independence and almost forget I still have one.

Yes, cats rule!
I have to disagree with you about the walking, though – my cats are both leash-trained and I didn’t train them until they were one and two. I have a Ragdoll and a BSH but the BSH (female) likes to potter about, smelling flowers, climbing trees, etc, rather than walking for long periods, whereas my Ragdoll boy will walk for over a mile. That said, they prefer walking in woods or enclosed areas – not open space or paths near roads etc.

The kitten I have now is my first cat ever. She is a HUGE beggar! She’s already knows she’s not supposed to climb in my lap when I have food, and I know this because the second I start turning to push her off, she leaps away and hides for a minute. Yet still, she tries and tries to get at my food, and will sit at my feet staring and meowing when I have any. She’s worse than my cocker spaniel was!
All that said, so far has been an amazing learning experience so far.

Well I have had cats most of my life but currently own a small dog.And quite frankly, she is a much better pet/companion than any of my cats.I let her out twice daily to do her business and keep her bowl filled with kibble, no further maintenance required. As low maintenance as a cat is you still have that nasty litter box to clean regular. And NO cat can ooze love and outright adoration as good as the average dog.

It really does depend on how you’ve raised your pets. A year ago, I adopted two cats from a friend who was moving to Japan. I’ve had dogs all my life and imagine my surprise when I found out that dogs are NOT more loyal than cats. My cats are actually more loyal than their canine counterparts in respect that they will respond and come ONLY to my husband and I whereas my dogs will come to anyone that they deem friendly. Most cats have a WAY more mellow personality than most dogs and that might be why so many people feel that they are unaffected creatures. As far as I can tell, they are just as affectionate as our dogs (albeit a lot less annoying about it) and they are very amusing and quirky.
Oh, and just to prove Terry’s post wrong, once again the two cats that we adopted came to us toilet trained. That’s right, no walks, no litter box, they go right in the crapper! I really have yet to see a dog do that!

I love both cats and dogs, but I did some research on dogs and I realised that cats love their owners just as much as dogs, believe it or not! for sure cats can be a bit stubborn and snobby but that is just there poshy and independant nature! it doesn’t mean that cats don’t love their owners! we’ll never know if they do or not, talking from my experience with cats, I personally believe that cats do love their owners, because some how i just feel connected with my cat and when she looks up at me, i know there is an instant bond. And also, every cat is different, they all have different personalities some may be stubborn some may not be stubborn, some may love you and some may not. When i did research on dogs I found that dogs aren’t loyal because they love, what dogs have between a human is not love, they believe that they are part of a human pack therefore they will do anything to stay in the pack, if you abuse them, dogs will stay with you, because they believe they have a position in the human pack, for example, there is always a dog that gets picked on in a pack of wild dogs, if you abuse your dog he thinks he is in that position, there is always a dominant dog in the pack, and that is the PET dogs master, and the PET dog believes he needs to do everything the master asks him to, the master is the BOSS.

Hi my name’s Hertriani, I lived in Jakarta, Indonesia. My family is currently fostering 46 or so cats and kittens in my house. It’s more like owning a cat-zoo! We spend up to one-third of our monthly income for the cats – the feed, vitamins, vet, and shampoos. Crazy, eh? But we just can’t refuse them. Neighboring people were throwing unwanted cats and kittens to our house. However only 3-4 cats are allowed to stay inside the house, while the rest are concentrated in the frontyard, the kittens have the backyard for them. Sadly I have to lock the female ones in the large cage in the frontyard, otherwise they won’t stop producing kittens and that will surely blow my head! But there are only 13 of them.
I completely believe that cats bring good luck and prosperity, as it happens over and over with my family. It might sounds crazy to spend one-third of monthly income for cats, but we found it always enough for us. But of course we still can’t afford to sterilize the female cats, as it costs IDR 600,000 (US$ 65) per cat, practically one-tens of our monthly income.
Should anyone care for donating to these cats, contact me
at pomodorisalsa@yahoo.com, because this is purely social work. I planned to sterilize all female cats I have so that they can play free outside the cage.

I like cats but I don’t mind dogs. I think maybe dogs are more maintenance, but they can guard your house, and keep you fit by going for walks.
Overall, a top article and fun to read.

Major fail! Cat’s are better because they are better looking? Shallow… Cat’s are better because they have bigger egos… Cat’s are independent… Then what’s the point? Are you looking for a pet or wanting to be charitable to a furry, cute, little creature that doesn’t care if it ever sees the sun again? Yes, they are cute. Yes, they can be great pets. Yes, they are more low maintenance so if you are lazy or irresponsible, please get a cat rather than a dog, but this doesn’t make them better. You are trying to prove cats are better than dogs, not that cats are better as pets. Yes, both are subjective, but I’m not going to even argue the first point because there’s probably an infinite amount of points to argue which species is better than the other. However, as a pet, you can probably take online assessments to see which pet better suits your lifestyle. To me though, I cat is a pet, and a pet only. Dogs are more than pets. They are more intelligent, and love you unconditionally (for the most part, some dogs/breeds are insane). They can be part of a family. A cat is no more a family member than the colonies of ants living in the nooks and crannies of your home.

I fully agree with you, cat’s are the perfect pet. I hate the way dogs smell, even after a bath they still have that bad odor. Cats may scratch furniture, but you can train them not to. Dogs scratch hardwood flooring with their claws and track mud all over the house, there is no solution for that. Our neighbor’s dog barks all throughout the day, it drives me to the point of insanity. Dogs are a public nuisance, they urinate and deficate on other people’s lawns and the urine kills the grass. They are also dangerous, I’ve had two unprovoked dog bites and my sister has almost lost her eye from a family friend’s dog, I’ve never been hurt by a cat before. I love when I’ve had a bad day and my cats cuddle up to me and purr, it makes me feel loved. One of my cats will even follow me around the house and meow at the door when I go into another room. Who says cats don’t enjoy being around their human companions? As for those who base their love of dogs on the fact that they’re more intelligent, this might be true, but so what? A monkey is smarter than a dog, does that make it a good pet?
Jess
On October 10, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Cat’s make more practical pets. They are cleaner, and not as needy as a dog. They are easier to take care of, less expensive and provide all the affection in the world. Depending on the breed of cat, some wil even go on walks with you. Also, British shorthairs are known for being extremely trainable. Dogs seem to be slightly more intelligent, but what good does that do for someone looking for a dog primarily to have a pet? Sure Fido can bring you your slippers (if he doesn’t destroy them first) and do tricks to impress your friends, but my friends are equally impressed by my cat’s ability to do backflips in the hair. Dogs are better to own for reasons other than being pets. Some (not all) breeds make good watchdogs, some can protect you, some are good working dogs, etc. However, when comparing cats to dogs in terms of being a pet, I think a cat would make more sense.

1.) Litterboxes are kept inside = stinks up the house
2.) Ill give you that one
3.) Remember when he licks your face, his tongue is used to “clean his body”..including his asshole
4.) Cats whine (meow) all the time, sometimes bc they want something…extremely annoying
5.) l-o-l…
6.) Depends how you raise it…some cats beg, as well as dogs. Not all cats beg neither do all dogs
7.) When Im sleeping thats why I really want in my ear, a cat purring.
8.) Im not disagreeing.
9.) Thats because cats dont do anything. They lie around, stink up some room of your house, and occasionally want attention on their own time.
10.) That might be nice for some, but Id rather take my dog outside to walk then just lie around with my cat inside and take naps all day.

I totally agree. I simple like cats more because they are just so ADORABLE. Especially kittens. Most of my friends are dog lovers and even they admit that kittens are super cute. Sorry dogs but for cuteness, cats score 100000/10. Plus most cats are very elegant. It’s fascinating just watching a cat walk. ∑=3

Great article. I think the biggest reason cats are so much better than dogs is they can take care of themselves and don’t rely on your existance for survival. They are every bit as loving and loyal as a dog. My parent’s cat accidently took a ride to church 15 miles away from his house and, even though it took him almost a week, he came back home. Not loyal? Don’t think so!

I think one of the top reasons cats are better than dogs is that they\’re safer. Dogs are known to turn on their own family members, especially children and infants and kill them. Dogs may see someone as competition or food. You\’ll never have to worry about getting your face eaten off by a cat.

Let me rebate your 10 points:
No, they don’t. They’re spraying their scent on you to claim you.
1) Read bout Japanese Chin and Shiba Inu. They are just as clean (or more) than cats.
2) Lots of dog breeds are most independent than cats. Shar Pei and Alakan Malamute are the first than come to my mind.
3) Again, Shiba Inu and Japanese Chin… BTW, thei Chin not only acts like a cat, but looks like one (if you find that a pro).
4) Shar Pei and Chow Chow are very quiet. Also, lots of cats when lookind for attention just mimic a baby’s cry. That is way louder (and a lot more creepier) than a bark.
5) Gosh, there are so many breeds of dogs to rebate this. Cavalier King Charles, just to begin. BTW, this breed is also very aloof, if you like that kind of pet.
6) Dogs don’t usually beg for food. If they do is because you have give them food while you’re eating.
7) Indisputable. If you like that sound, cats are for you.
9) Not all dogs expect to be walked, and cats SHOULD be taken outdoors to make exercise, the fact that they don’t just speaks of the laziness of the general cat owner.
10) Breeds like Shin Tzu where breed specifically to live indoors.
Maybe because most cats breeds are all the same, most cat owners asume it’s the same with dogs. A little research would show you that when it comes to dogs, there’s plenty of options to choose from.

I appreciate the differences mentioned. And I love dogs, but I have a difficult time with an animal that has anxiety problems whenever I am not home. And they smell too, and it gets cold here sometimes and I would hate walking one in the winter. I never owned a dog but I’ve dog watched. I guess each breed is different. My cat (God rest her soul) was 21 years old when she died. She was a teriffic animal. Clean, extremely affectionate to the point of being a nuisance some times, and I really miss her. So easy to take care of and great to have around in the house.

Cats don’t try to KILL YOU like mine did when i was a child. Booo! Right now my cat is purring on my lap and practicly smiling at me… so cute! Don’t get me wrong… some dogs are cute. SOME. My mom, son & I have 10 cats & most of them mind pretty well, they are very playful, some don’t get along but that’s fine, neither do kids or grown-ups such as life. We have a Bengal named Boo Boo & I caught him wanting to fight with my mom’s cat Jo Jo because Jo Jo is very dominant & such a bully so Boo Boo has learned to fight back but we won’t allow it. Bengals are pretty smart cats so as I caught him, I sternly said to him, “Boo Boo No, back off, Boo Boo, back, come on, come.” He walked backwards & came inside. Dogs don’t mind to such response because they have raisons for brains. We had a yapping Yorkie who we tried to train when he was 4 months, we tried everything but nothing worked! My mom & I have Fibromyalgia & we can’t take too much stress & I can’t afford to have seizures. He wouldn’t mind when we said, “Chase! No!” He would bark inside & outside. People should not let their puppies or dogs bark at all times. We had to give him to someone who loves dogs. Why do we love cats more than dogs? Because they don’t f—ing BARK at all times of the day or night. Fibromyalgia is serious!

DogsRock:
I agree wholly with your complete pwnage of the list. I am going to take it just a bit further:
I have both a dog and a cat (shnauzer and god-knows what) of similar ages. They are more or less of a similar size and mass. My dog is a member of the family; he is more than simply the obligation that I have to my cat, which gives absolutely nothing in return for the food, water and shelter I give her. My cat comes home after a day of lying in the garden at around 7:00 to eat her meal, and as soon as she is finished (about 7:10ish), she buggers right off again, never seen again until the following night.
Contrary to some opinions, cats rely merely on primordial instinct; behind that cute/sophisticated facade is just a mind constantly on the alert for an unlucky victim. They cannot be trained in the same way as dogs. For example, locking a dog into a small space as a disciplinary action will teach it to behave in another fashion to avoid this eventuallity in the future, whereas a cat cannot interpret this as a disciplinary action in the first place, giving it no hope in learning anything in the process. Cats serve as good pets, about as well as your average guinea pig or alternative, but sadly the only considerably sophisticated intelligence that any given cat exhibits is its unrivalled ability to display false affection for its owner in order to attain food. I’m sorry, but I believe that in my fairly extensive experience (having owned and known around a dozen cats) that so called ‘cat-owners’ that expect love and affection from a cat are sadly living a lie. If you want love and affection from an animal other than a human, get a dog. Just look at that crazed, wide-eyed expression that cats wear; is there really anything empathetic there?

the question is not whether a cat or dog is better, but whether each individual is a “cat” person or a “dog” person. It’s about the people. I did not read through all comments, so maybe someone else gave that opinion. but that is mine…

I totally agree with u – my cat is sat on my shoulder right now (who says you can’t train a cat?- it’s just difficult to UN-train them
)i do like dogs, just not the smell of them, and i do prefer cats, althogh me + my best friend have the ‘which is better’ argument quite lot – she’s a dog girl, im a mad cat lady in the making! one of your points, though, that i dont agree with – i have a siamese cat and he meows when i am talking to tell me he is hungry, even if he’s just been fed, then if im quiet he’ll curl up next to me and purr. my old cat (passed away 2007) used to have some sort of 6th sense. whenever i was upset, within 5 mins he would be next to me, purring away :’)

To those who say dogs are more intelligent, are you just equating with “intelligence” with submission to your will? More eagerness to do what “massuh” wants does not necessarily equal more intelligence. My cats know their names and understand “get down!” Francis responds to “up,” “come here” and “gimme kiss.” Vinnie doesn’t always come when I call him, but his ears perk up and if he’s awake, he looks my way too. So he knows that when I say “Vinnie,” I’m talking to him. Also, both my cats walk on the harness and leash now. There are cats in movies, btw, so clearly they are trainable.
In terms of devotion to owners, my cats absolutely adore me, cats just don’t show love in the same way as dogs. You have to learn to read the signals. Also remember, dogs are wired to submit to a master’s will. Dogs “can’t” live without you. Cats totally can live without humans (and they know it) but “choose” to live with them anyway. They really are “wild” animals who happen to like humans. That attachment is more meaningful to me.
My cats ARE more than “pets!” My boys are like my kids. It’s totally not a “master-pet” relationship in my apartment. I don’t need my existence affirmed by an overly-affectionate, hyperactive creature like a dog, who just “loves” everything. I don’t see much use for a dog other than guarding a house when you can get love and affection from the lower-maintenance cat. Although an alarm system is cheaper and lower maintenance than a dog, I think having a rottweiler in the front yard is more intimidating to criminals
.
Patty made a good point though. Some people are just “cat people,” though it is possible to like both equally.

Cats are better than dogs. Why?
1. Litter boxes do not stink up the house.
2. Some dogs eat their poop and lick your face and in your mouth.
3. Cats may lick their *** but don’t lick your face.
4. Dogs need to be trained and it gets into your free time.
5. Dogs are smelly and messy and not very bright.

I think cats are much better, I don’t know what me and my partner Michael Smith would do without our little fuzzy muffins. We really enjoy when fuzzy muffins participates in our intimate moments. It really helps us bond and forget about all the times we have been beaten for being “Flaming Homosexuals”. A dog could never offer that level of comfort.

I totally agree. I’ve had cats, dogs, birds, and guinea pigs and I found that I prefer cats. I respect an animal that has self respect and won’t let you shit on them and mistreat them. Dog worshippers tend to get pissed when you dare not agree with them but I doesn’t matter. The one constant I’ve noticed is that rarely do cat owners go beserk and trash dog lovers yet the same is not true in the reverse; dog lovers aren’t content to just like their animal, they have to force you to love it too and go insane when you don’t conform. Tough shit. I don’t need something kissing my ass and begging me for constant attention to know that it loves me (not to mention stinking up the joint and eating it’s own crap) so those canine acolytes can keep their damn dogs. Cats, birds, and horses are superior pets any frigging day.

I totally agree with Nick. When you have the cat vs dog argument. The cat lover seems more level headed than the dog lover. The dog lover can’t stand or can’t believe that a person can possibly like cats more. A cat lover will be open and like cats and dogs equally, in most cases. But most dog lovers will barf at the thought of even considering a cat to be worthy of being liked.
To be honest, you can’t compare the two at all. They both have their pros and cons. It’s like comparing the PC to a MAC. The PC user will swear by the PC, the MAC user by the MAC.
Yes, dogs might be more loyal and loving in general. But you can’t say that cats aren’t capable of being as loyal or affectionate. My cat honestly acts like a dog. But a cleaner and a less messier one.
Overall, I love dogs and cats. But cats are way more convenient. They provide the same love and affection that a dog would. I know. I have a cat and a dog. Don’t get me wrong. I Love my Husky. But it’s like taking care of a toddler that will never grow up.
Concluding, dogs may be more “intelligent”. But cats are smarter. It’s like someone who said above, monkeys are more intelligent than dogs, doesn’t make them good pets.
I’m merely stating the facts. And a word to the dog- lovers. Be open-minded.

I have a cat who greats me at the door, push’s up against my legs when i wake in the morning, he also sits patiently and waits for me to give him his food. He grew up with a dog for most of his life, but he is a big breed of cat and was bigger then the dog, so always tried to act more doniment. With the cat growing up with the dog he plays fetch, will come to his name, and also knows when he is in trouble. My partner has taught the cat to give a high five with his paw and also to roll over. I believe cats are just as smart as dogs, and a lot less to handle.

Hmm many of these dog people are making the argument for why cats are better. You don\’t need to know where your cat is 75 % of the time because they don\’t always need to be monitored all. the time. The cat will find you when there is affection to be had or given.
What is with all the name calling from the K-9 crowd? Who are they trying to convince? Us or themselves?
As for Whats better. I am very happy with my cats as they have all the cat qualities that make them great members of my house

I have two cats and one dog. I love all my pets, but I’m sorry, dogs are the superior species. Can you take your cat out hiking in the mountains for a few hours? Can you take your cat to the beach? Are there police cats? Are there bomb-sniffing cats? Are there drug-sniffing cats? To the people who have problems with their dog eating crap or smelling, it’s called responsibility. Investing time in your dog will return ten-fold. Cats are great for people who want to watch life pass them by from their window. As far as cosmetics, hair on the furniture, etc, each animal is capable of being worse than the next so it is up for debate and not a viable argument. Facts are facts, dogs are more versatile. At Nick: FYI there are just as many “cat people” bashing dog lovers on similar sites. It’s not that I need to know where my dog is 100%, but if I’m going to have a pet, I want it to want to be around me because it loves me, not because it wants something.

”This IS an age old question,. And as one in seven people own cats, prefer them as pets, then I know that cats are the best. They DO love you unconditionally. EVERY cat is different, yes, you do get the stereotypically snobby ones, but that makes people brand all cats as snobby. People brand all dogs as loyal and faithful, yet when you come across those dogs that maul children do death and behave more worse than Marley in Marley and Me, STILL people call dogs the most loyal and faithful. That isn’t fair. You get ferocious dogs in this world that could attack you to the death. You get dogs that can turn your house upside down. Cats? They can all be lovable. They won’t maul you to death. They could occasionally scratch you, but that’s better than getting a dogs slobbery saliva all over you after they’ve eaten their own poop (YES DOGS EAT THEIR POOP). My cat follows me when I need to get the groceries. Sometimes she even sneaks on the bus. She’ll come with me everywhere and loves me like no other. Though I do love dogs, they are cute, adorable, and loyal, but nothing can take a cats place in my heart. There’s something about the way cats go about independently in their lives, and at the end of the day come and sit in your lap and purr affectionately when you’ve had a hard day’s work. They will killl their prey and then give it to you as a gift. But people call cats selfish. How is that selfish? They will spend their time trying to catch a mouse (mice, those creatures that attack the food in our cupboards and disease us) and then give the dead thing to you as a gift. Humans do find this disgusting, but you have to see through that and think, this cat loves me so much that they are showing such an act of unselfishness, the dead mouse is like a prize catch for them but bless them they’ll give it to you. People show dogs saving lives and helping the blind etc but no one thinks of ‘xyz cat’ that phoned the ambulance for it’s owner having a heart attack, or ‘abc cat’ that went to get the fire brigade when it’s owners were trapped in a fire. There are so many beautiful stories that show how much these faithful companions love you. Cats.. are just the greatest.”
I found this post online and it touched me, wanted to share with you all.

I think there are pros and cons to both cats and dogs, but I’ve always preferred dogs over cats. I think what I hate more care stereotypical cat loves who are like “My cat is so much smarter than a dog, it comes to me when you call it!” Dogs just show more affection, they don’t act like they own the place, and would do anything to protect you. Cats could care less if you’re there as long as you have food and water for it. And the only reason cats don’t attack their owners is because their owners are much bigger than them! They don’t see them as prey!
And just one more thing….don’t flush you cat poop/pee down the toilet (i.e. don’t have your cat “toilet trained”). Ever heard of toxoplosmosis? That gets into the water system, especially if you live close to the water. It’s been killing sea otters in California:

why would anyone want an animal, whom they are supposed to love, to die for you? that isn’t love. it is ego. Of all the dogs and cats I have looked after (foster, cared for through illness and had as ‘pets’) both dogs and cats and, personally, I just love cats. Their ‘independence’ is like my independence. I am happy alone and with them, I trust that. A dog want me, needs me, almost regardless. My relationship with cats comes from interaction and honesty. Once a cat has fallen in love with you their seeming aloofness disappears. You never see it again. I love that they like to be with me AND they have their own business. I don’t want them as my emotional slaves – I want a give and take relationship with them. Something I have not found with a dog. I do think, though, that the real difference is us – what it is that each of us like and respond too. I like independence and a more equal relationship which I find with cats. I do not respond to neediness or pack mentality. I don’t necessarily think one is ‘better’ than the other. Dogs ARE lovely, after all, but people are attracted to various personalities – human and non human.
of course: cats purr! just bliss.

@ lab lovers, you ment to put the “.” in 239,865,736,573,665,453,985.686 BEFORE 239 right? Dogs are ugly, why would you want one??? The only dogs i like are huskys. Also, people say cats “scratch”. Well they have obusly never been around a tammed cat that was not abbused! Commonly, the only time cats scratch is when they are frightened. Try holding one tightly, then light fire crackers and you will see what I mean. And when they do scratch, big deal! you usualy dont bleed, and it does not hurt at all! Now for people who say they get run over, (↑), dogs may have x2 the brain size, but cats use their barins x4 better. The only ones that are run over are kittens who were taken from thier mother and hadn’t learned that cars are dangerous. now @ “fag”… Your name is obously fag for a reason! If you leave your dog at home over vecation, it probably wont be there when you get back. Plus you half to buy fences to keep a dog, and they stop at nothing to get out and go onto a road and chase cars. My idiot neibor has to enterupt me every 10 minuts to help me find his dog. And cats can take care of themselves, and believe it or not, cats can kill dogs . they climb up trees, and have been known to land on an attacking dog and scratch them to death. (this is rare nowdays though). when people say dogs would die for their owners, the really would just die for food. They are too dumb to know that once their dead, their dead. also, cats help the enviorment MUCH MUCH MUCH more than dogs… So… seriously, there is no competition. Dogs are just dumb smelly loud balls of energy. Cats are cute and cuttley, and cats can be used to sniff out bombs and drugs, but they must be trained as kittens.
