How to Train Cat to Sleep at Night

“The cat leaves alone, has no need for society, obeys only when she pleases, pretends to sleep so she may see clearly, and scratches anything that she can lay her paw,” so the saying goes.

Cats are naturally nocturnal animals. They are built to prowl and hunt especially at night, so why need to alter this natural habit? Well, for one thing, humans are not nocturnal animals and we need to sleep at night. Second, our cats don’t have to prowl anymore since we feed them, and we don’t want them disturbing the neighbors. Here are some tips on how to make your kittycat sleep soundly at night.

Tip# 1 Make him follow your schedule, not you following his

Cats are known not to like surprises, and are happier with a predictable schedule. Cats know its breakfast or dinner time or nap time. Your aim here is to make your schedule predictable for your cat so that both of you can jive with each other. Set time for food, safe outdoor play, interactive play, grooming, and other activities.  Provide some time before bedtime for playtime, making your cat at least tired enough for a good night’s sleep.

Tip #2 Get another Cat

Cats are social animals so if your cat lives alone at home it is most probable that he is bored, sad, and crave attention. Nobody likes to live alone so buy your cat a buddy with which he can play with and make him at least tired enough to sleep soundly at night. A female cat woudn’t hurt either if you have a male. However do think about the prospect of having a litter of kittens in the near future if yo do this.

Tip# 3 Make you sleep as well

There is a possibility that even if you follow the tips above faithfully, your cats will not be able to sleep soundly at night, owing to their natural nocturnal habits, so you should do something for yourself as well. Drinking a glass of milk before bed is 1 of the proven ways to make you sleep soundly at night due to the substance tryptophan. If that doesn’t help, you may consult your doctor for a mild sedative. Remember, it is your good night’s sleep, and not your cats’, that’s most important and is the reason for this article.

Tip# 4 Don’t Give in to Demands

Make it clear to your cat that sleeptime is not mealtime. Some cats make a habit of waking up their owners too early in the morning, thinking it’s breakfast time. You should learn not to give in to those demands. Remember, even if your cat thinks he owns you, literally you still own him. You’re still the boss.

Tip# 5 Discipline

One of the tips I read lately was about a cat owner “snatching” his cat. Whenever the cat misbehaves or keeps him up at night, he would snatch and hold the cat until it whines. He keeps repeating the practice until his cat stopped misbehaving and keeping him up at night. Sometimes tough love is the way to go.

These are just some tips to help you make your cat sleep at night. Do remember, however, that cats are nocturnal creatures, and what’s important is that you be able to sleep soundly at night, even if your cat doesn’t.

My cats are strange, they naturally sleep during the night and play during the day. I guess if one sees it happening the others copy.
