Should You Allow Your Cat to Sit on Your Lap While Working From Home?

Many cat owners love the idea of turning their skittish little ball of fur into a lovable lap cat that will jump onto their lap and purr contentedly. But is it a good idea to allow your cat to sit on your lap when you are working?

Many cat owners love the idea of turning their skittish little ball of fur into a lovable lap cat that will jump onto their lap and purr contentedly. But is it a good idea to allow your cat to sit on your lap when you are working?

Distraction

Just as the TV, unexpected callers and the phone can cause a distraction for people who work from home, a lap cat can also distract people from their work and make them forget what they were doing, how far off they were from completing an assignment and so forth. Many lap cats will not be content to just sit in their owner’s laps. They will expect to be stroked, spoken to and made a fuss of. Fluffy will have no concept of time or the importance of getting work completed. As far as he’s concerned, as long as he is sitting in your lap that is his time. Even if you try to ignore your cat, he might still nudge you as you sit at your desk typing or shift around several times on your lap in an effort to get your attention.

Claws

Cats that still have their claws will use them even when they are not scratching a post or trying to leap onto a fence. They will also use their claws when sitting in your lap relaxing. Cats will use their claws to hook into your skin or to just flex them, which sometimes means catching your clothes and grazing your skin.

Company

Work from home opportunities are great for people who want to alter their routine to include greater flexibility, time to spend with their families and take time off more easily when they need to. But working from home can also leave people feeling rather isolated and alone when they spend day after day sitting at their desk working. In cases such as these, having their cats close by and allowing them to sit on their lap gives them some much needed company throughout the day.

If you work from home and you are around your cats on a regular basis, you will need to consider how you feel about allowing your cats to sit on your lap while you work. Some people who work at home are able to work without allowing their lap cats to distract them at all, while others cannot work and have their cats sit on their lap at the same time.
