The Korat: Thailand’s Lucky Cat

The beautiful and elegant Korat is a mischievous, cheeky, yet lovable breed of cat, known in it’s native Thailand as a bringer of good fortune; the lucky cat.

The beautiful Korat is a natural breed (not created by man, as many pedigrees are), originally found in Thailand and first brought to the UK in around 1850. The people of Thailand regard the Korat as a lucky cat, bringing good fortune to it’s owners.

They are often given in pairs to newly-wed couples, to ensure a happy marriage, and were were once used in rain ceremonies. However, the Korat wasn’t as lucky in the UK, where it was disqualified from a cat show and accused of being “an inferior blue Siamese.” they weren’t heard of again until more than a century later, and are still very rare, with only small numbers of breeders compared to many similar cats. The Korat is now a recognised pedigree in the UK, acceptable only in it’s natural shade of blue.

Korats have a typically Asian appearance, with a sleek body and a unique short, shimmering blue coat, tipped with silver. Their faces are elegant and resemble the shape of a heart, with balanced, even features. Their wide eyes are blue as tiny kittens, amber as young cats and, upon maturity, they turn a brilliant shade of emerald green. They are slim cats but may bulk out in later years, creating a more robust physique. They are rarely over-weight, due to their hyperactivity.

Korats are very noisy, talkative cats, and love to emulate the actions of their owners, or other pets. They’re extremely active and can usually be found tearing around the house at top speed, climbing into all sorts of places they shouldn’t, and generally causing trouble. They are said to be fearless and like to be the dominate cat in a multi-cat household; they will not be bossed around.

However, they are also gentle and sweet, and particularly affectionate, loving to curl up in a ball on your lap after a long day of trouble-making. They are also very loyal and love to follow their owners around, eager to get involved in anything that’s going on. They are inquisitive and love to explore, so special care is needed when loading washing machines and tumble-dryers, dish-washers, etc. Some describe them as naughty, but they are intelligent, strong-willed adventurers – the scientists of the cat world, they are simply experimenting…

Korats are easy to train and will happily play fetch with the children, or learn to walk on a leash. They love to play with toys (and anything else they might find – be warned!) and will always be ready for a game… if you can keep up with them.

If you think you’re up to the challenge of keeping a Korat happy, consider allowing one of these charming and unusual felines into your life – it will never be the same again.

Thanks Martie, I think they’re beautiful, too. I’m looking at a kitten in a couple of weeks, as a prospective breeding queen. I’m so excited!
