Towser, The Real Killer Cat

Read about this unique cat, the real mice terminator.

Cats like dogs are man’s favourite pets. So much has been said of cats, their playful manners, their habits, their magnetic looks and more.

Cats are wonderful pets, but more than pets, their prowess has not been understood as there are plenty of incidents to prove their capabilities. Take for instance the power of a cat named Towser who roamed the Glenturret Distillery, Scotland and caught an estimated 28,900 mice averaging 3 mice a day. May be she had been decorated with awards, but the fitting tribute came in the form of appreciation when she earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records. A statue(picture below) has also been erected at the distillery with an inscription lauding her achievements as “Mice Terminator”with the following inscription:

She caught 28,899 mice in her lifetime, world mousing champion, Guinness Book of Records” .

It was customary to have cats in distilleries to keep an eye on the rodents who enjoyed nibbling the barley stocks. Glenturret (See the picture below)was famous for the Scotch whiskey and they had to store barley stocks. Towser had this special privilege of roaming the distillery and kill any mice that invaded the premises or venturing near the barley stock. Towser was indeed a terror to the mice population and she enjoyed her position till her last breath.

Her prowess as a mice terminator was well recognized. Apart from the rare honour of a beautiful statue erected in the distillery and true to her status, her paw prints are seen in one of the whiskey bottle labels.

She had some successors, but none of them came close to her pouncing skills and it was no wonder that she was a unique cat.
