Many scientists believe that purring is the result of nerves being activated in the voice box and that it occurs involuntarily. Another theory is the purring comes from the blood vessels.

Cats purr for many reasons. When cats are happy and contented they will purr. However, cats will also purr when they are in pain or injured. It is believed that this is because the vibration of purring can stimulate healing and soothe pain. The vibration of purring is also said to speed up bone growth. Cats also purr while they are giving birth. This is believed to be a mechanism to help the kittens find their mother since they are born blind and also to make them feel at ease.
Being around a purring cat is also said to be good for human beings. Purring has been known to reduce stress levels and to provide emotional support in times of need. Everyone knows how good it feels to be close to or to hold a purring cat. There are even some who believe that purring can ease stomach pain and boost the human immune system.

Every cat’s purr is different, some purr so loudly that you can hear them from across the room while you can only hear other’s when you are right next to them.
No matter what the reason or the cause of purring is, it is a pleasure to be near a purring cat. No one can resist the cat’s purr.
