Borzoi dogs are known for being gentle and having good manners. They are a good example of pets that show beauty and grace. Several pet owners find these dogs fun to be with especially in racing games. The Borzoi breed of dog is also called the Russian Wolfhound. It was often associated with the English and Russian nobility. Agility and bravery are the major qualities of a Borzoi while its elegant and tall body is the main physical attribute. These characteristics are primarily designed for hunting and speed. Other traits include independence, calmness, loyalty to its family, affection and tolerance for other dogs.
The place of origin of Borzoi dogs is Russia. They were used for hunting wild animals such as hare, wolf and fox in a game held on an open field. Their sense of sight is rather used for hunting than sense of smell. In this purpose, people realized the importance of the structure of their bodies to lure the said quarries. Apart from hunting and racing games, Borzois are also efficient in other outdoor activities like lure coursing, agility sports and events.
Borzoi breed of dog was imported to the United States of America in 1890. Many people in this country appreciate the dog for its impressive abilities and gentle manners needed for good lure coursers. In general, borzois enjoy cold weather and long running activities. They make good pets because they are quiet at home. However, it must be noted that they are not affectionate towards strangers just like most breeds of dog. Little children can be treated well by them but they are not ideal playmates.
In spite of the quietness and calmness of these dogs in the indoors, they still need to be provided with a wide outdoor space where they can run around. Therefore, owners must give them a fenced yard that is safe enough for their place of exercise. Walking with them each day can also be a form of exercise. However, they should not be permitted to go to busy streets and highways to get rid of any accident. With proper training, Borzois can be excellent and lovable house pets. Although they are huge in size, they are still graceful animals. In the event that they are left at home alone for a long period of time, provision of a kennel run or crate outdoors is important.
Does this breed of dog need some grooming? Yes, it does. A borzoi is covered with soft and wavy medium- length hair which needs to be groomed regularly to remove dirt and loose hair. Regular bathing is necessary but not as frequent as other dog breeds require. Owners should trim the excess hair in the middle of the pads of feet.
Borzoi dogs are generally healthy. Nevertheless, they can experience some health problems like torsion, bloating, dysplasia of shoulders and hips. Some of them are found to have Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA and Osteochondritis Dissecans or OCD. In other words, the health of Borzois lies in the hands of the owners. With proper care and nutrition, they can hardly be affected by any disease.
The Borzoi is one of the best breeds of dog in the world. It just does not make a good pet but more importantly, a great friend to have.
