Choosing The Best Dog for Your Child

You can not really pick one dog breed that is best for children. It all depends on the child and the dog. Some dog breeds are considered better to live with families with children but not all dogs in this breed will make suitable family dogs.

You cannot really pick one dog breed that is the best for children.  It will depend on the child and the temperament of the individual dog.  Every child is different; every dog is different, and there are no two alike.

Some dog breeds are better suited in general to live with families with children.  The Labrador and Golden Retriever are considered easygoing dogs that would be good choices for family dogs.  These two breeds are the most popular choices for family dogs.  The drawback with these two breeds is that they are quite large dogs.  If the children are very small, the dog might knock them down and not mean to.  Your children must be taught how to act when around a dog and how to treat the dog.

Dogs can be a great part of growing up, and they will provide companionship and enjoyment.  Dogs also teach responsibility, which is good.  Children must be taught not to pull the dog’s ears, poke them with objects, and play tug of war games and jumping on a sleeping dog.  These actions can get a child into a lot of trouble and even bite.

You should avoid the larger boisterous breeds but there are exceptions.  The small breeds need to be watched also as they have a tendency to be snappy.

Be sure to start socializing your new dog immediately.  Introduce the dog to the children, other animals, sounds and smells in their new home.  Teach your new dog the basic commands of sit, stay, down, come and so on.  Never leave your new dog and children alone and unsupervised.

There is no perfect breed for children, but many people consider the Golden Retriever and one of the best breeds.  They are a quite even-tempered dog.  The drawback is that they are a large dog, and this could be a problem with very small children.  The Golden Retriever is a loyal dog, and most Golden Retrievers will make great family dogs.

Another good choice is the Labrador, but he is also a very large dog.  They are gentle and make good family dogs.  Labradors sometimes are hard to train.  They do not reach mental maturity until they are about 3 years old.

The Australian shepherd is a working breed of dog, and they are intelligent and very loyal.  They are a suitable size for a child’s dog.

The Cocker Spaniel is another good choice.  They are the right size, gentle and loyal.  They also get along great with children.

Another good choice is the Poodle.  Poodles are intelligent, loyal and very docile, and they make great family dogs.

Several other breeds make good family dogs.  Every dog is an individual and just because the breed as a whole is considered, a family dog breed does not mean that every dog of that breed will make a good family dog.

I sound like a kid, and look like a kid even though I am months away from becoming 41. Dogs do not like me. I had two dogs that liked me and that was over 25 years ago.
