- These dogs need to be comfortable. You will need atleast two washable dog beds for him. Mine loves his donut bed. He curls up in it like a little baby. However, most maltese dogs prefer softer satin-like beds. If you keep your dogs coat long then this is preffered because it will prevent knots in the hair. You could splurge a little if you feel so inclined. Maltese dogs are not violent or destructive. Wherever there new home is they make it there own and feel as though this is where their lives will be lived out. They tend to take care of their toys and belongings.
- What you should use to walk your dog
When walking a small dog you should always use a harness. These are used a lot more than collars and maltese dogs don’t fight it as much. My dog just puts his little head inside the harness willingly when its time for his walk. I’m sure it’s a lot more comfortable than a collar as well. Just always make sure to remove the harness after you take him for a walk as this could cause tangles and minor skin irritations if left on for too long.
3. Having your maltese neutered or spayed.
If you are not planning to breed your maltese you should have him neutered. Neutering is a routine but major surgery. To minimize risks make sure your puppy is atleast 8 months to a year old before having him neutered. Neutering you dog can prevent many bad habits. Such as “marking their territory” However, it will not prevent defacating in the house. ou will need behavior modification to fix that problem.
4. Illness that tends to be higher risk for maltese dogs.
Idiopathic tremor syndrom.
This illness often affects many different breeds of small white dogs. It is a neurological disorder associated with tremors, tilted head, trouble walking, and uncoordinated movements of the eyes. Most dogs recover after a few days of treatment with medication.
Patent ductus arteriosus
PDA causes abnormal blood flow and is the most common heart defect in dogs. It is less common in male dogs than it is in female. The symptoms are coughing,hard breathing, and weakened limbs.
Giardia
Is transmitted through fecal matter most commonly found in contaminated food and water.
Symptoms include: watery stools, weight loss, loss of appetite, And dehydration. Stress is usally the trigger to illness. Giardia can be transmitted from your dog to other humans. Hard to diagnose because the bacteria is not found in every stool released from the dog.
5. House breaking your pet
Maltese dogs have a bad reputation-that being they are very difficult to house train. In reality, house training a smaller dog is a lot simpler than a big dog. Maltese dogs have such a great motivation to please. They will whole-heartedly do as you ask, Just so long as you make sure they understand your rules. Accidents do happen. Just keep that in mind just incase your dog accidentally “makes” in the living room. Firmly tell him “No.” and take him to his wee wee pad So he learns. Do not scare your dog. Maltese are a very sensitive breed. It’s really saddening from them when they are punished. Dogs do not make connections between your displeasure and their wrong behavior. They just know that you are very mad at them. But they don’t know why you are so upset.
6. Fun tricks to teach your dog
Shake hands.
This is the most known and easiest to teach.
Simply tell him “shake hands!” and take his paw. than give him a treat.
*treats you could give your maltese without splurging are cheerios and cut up hot dog pieces.*
Repeat this a few times and soon he will get the point and give you his paw without having to take it yourself. when this eventually happens, reward him with lots of treats and praise saying “Good girl!” or “Good boy!” they love love love hearing that.
-The wave.
Once your dog learns shake hands, you can teach him how to wave. Tell your dog to shake hands and when he raises his paw, you keep your hand a little bit out of reach to make him raise his paw higher. Do not take the paw; instead, tell him “Wave,” and Give him a treat. Once he gets adjusted to this stop saying shake hands and just tell him to wave.
