There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t hear one of my neighbors yelling for their dog because he has walked or run off without them. Every time I hear his name being shouted I think to myself “When will they learn to put their dog on a leash”? Don’t these people know that there are leash laws?
Dogs are supposed to be on a leash when they are being walked and should not be outside of the home (unless in a fenced in yard) without one. The reason for this is protection! A dog that is on a leash cannot run into the street where they can be struck by a passing car. This also keeps your dog from running after a neighborhood cat or another dog they may not get along with. A few years ago this happened to a neighbor of mine. He let his dog outside without a leash and someone across the street was walking his dog. The man’s dog ran across the street and attacked the other dog. His dog had to be put to sleep!
In my opinion it is very irresponsible of an owner to let their dog walk around without a leash as there are so many dangers. What’s more is that many dogs that are out without a leash are not wearing collars and have no tags to say where they live so if they do run off it’s likely they will never be seen again. As an owner I can say that my dog never leaves my backyard without his leash! Can you say that?
