Normally when you hear of a dog having puppies, you expect the litter to be about 5 or 6 puppies. Maybe 8 or 9. But 21 puppies?

Daisy Mae, an American Bulldog, gave birth to 21 puppies this past September. Four of the puppies didn’t survive the birth, so she is left with 17 little ones. These are purebred bulldogs. The sire is a male bulldog named Groucho.

This was a major shock to her owners. They had intentionally bred her out, but didn’t expect so many puppies. They stayed up with Daisy Mae during the 20-hour delivery, and helped to bottle feed the puppies once they were born.

Now that the puppies have reached the 6-week mark, the family is looking to start getting them adopted out. After all, 17 puppies is a bit too much for one household! And by the way, this will be the last litter for Daisy Mae. Her family is going to retire her from breeding.

Amazing as it may be, 21 puppies is NOT the most puppies ever born to a dog. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, that honor belongs to a Mastiff who gave birth to 24 puppies back in 2005.
