What Does a Dog Grooming School Offer You?

Whether you want to pursue a career as a professional dog groomer or you simply want to learn more about taking care of your own pet, attending courses at a dog grooming school can provide you with the insight and experience you need to treat a dog’s coats, nails, teeth, ears, and more.

What does a dog grooming school offer you? One of the biggest advantages they can provide is the opportunity for you to work with real tools on a diverse assortment of dogs. Not only will this teach you the nuances of using brushes, combs, nail clippers, and other tools, but it will also allow you to learn how to anticipate and handle any situation.

In attending dog grooming school, you will also learn the safety requirements issued in most professional grooming salons. Even if your intent is not to pursue dog grooming professionally, learning these requirements will teach you how to make your home safe for grooming.

In addition to this, you will be learning tips, techniques, and insider secrets from dog grooming experts. This will give you a glimpse into the world of dog grooming you wouldn’t be able to find in any book or video.

Your dog grooming school will also teach you the best way to treat and prevent common problems many dogs experience, such as ticks, fleas, shedding, excessive dander, and more. You may also learn common treatments for hairless breeds as well, such as the need for sunscreen and moisturizer as well as which parts of the body require insulation.

A dog grooming school may also teach you more about the aesthetic aspects of dog grooming, such as hairstyling, nail painting, clothing, and more. You may also learn the grooming requirements for dog shows, such as the exact length of different fur types, how to trim whiskers, and more.

While dog grooming school may seem pricey for some, it’s widely agreed that it is more than worth it in the long run. The sheer amount of practice and learning opportunities will ensure that each time you brush your dog’s coat or trim its nails, you will be getting the best results possible. In addition to learning how to groom efficiently, dog grooming school can also save you thousands in salon bills.

Discover for yourself why dog grooming school can benefit you. Along with learning valuable skills and unforgettable lessons, you may also discover that grooming your dog yourself allows you to bond with your pet in a whole new way.

This is interesting. I didn’t suppose dogs could have beauticians too.

I guess so. But when we still shopped at PetCo, I always felt a bit sorry for the dogs being groomed and blow-dryed–the poor things just sort of stood there, like “OK, my human wants me to do this so for his/her sake…”

As a retired Professional Pet Groomer Of 14 years, i would have to say that while this is a well written article, the truth behind the matter is that most dog grooming schools don’t teach people much about grooming. I have seen many graduates coming out of grooming school that could not groom a dog at all. Truly, the best way to learn how to groom a dog is by apprenticing with an experienced groomer. Some local grooming shops will teach you how to groom your own dog for a small fee, which is a better choice than paying the price of a full course which will run you about $3000 plus the cost of tools. As far as learning how to groom for a profession, apprenticeship, again, is really the best way to go as you will be expected to be able to complete at least 8 dogs a day when applying for a job as a professional groomer. There are some grooming schools that offer this style of hands on training, and these are the types that are recommended for becoming a professional groomer.

I agree with Heather… also, a way to gain experience through hands on, in the end, it’s the Pet Parent who needs to be pleased. Offer to use their dog as a practice dog for a discounted fee. Some know how to groom, but choose not to because of time or the physical aspects of the process. Many would be happy to show you… for free.
