Finding a Vet for Your Pet
It can be difficult to find the right vet for your pet. Do you perfer an idividual vet practicing solo to care for your pet or would you rather have a team who is on call 24/7? If you find an office with 12 doctors, you will have lots more options than one with a private practice but you might not find the individual attention. Some pets have a problem seeing different vets and if this is your pet you might choose a vet practicing solo. But if you prefer always seeing the same vet, remember he will not be available 24/7 and may not be able to provide emergency care. A good way to start out is to ask friends and neighbors about their vets. Ask at your local groomer’s, the dog park and pet store. Look on the Internet and see what useful information you can find there.

When you go in to see the vet, pay particular attention to how you are treated. It’s a tip off if you get poor respect, it can mean you will receive poor service. You should be welcomed by helpful employees.
Many people put up with poor service because it’s an aggravation to change vets, if you have a question about your pets care. Ask the vet. If you feel you must change doctors, tell your vet why. It might help him give better service in the future.
Be suspicious of any vet who doesn’t want hospitalized pets to have visitors and won’t let family be present during euthanasia.
Beware of a vet who won’t listen to your input. You are with your dog more than anyone and should be part of your pet’s health team.
If you pet freezes, cowers or tries to hide in the vet’s office, consider if it’s because of the vet’s actions that is upsetting your pet.
Is the place clean? Ask to see the facilities and if you aren’t allowed, you should certainly wonder why.

Good tips. Fortunately my 12 year old cat only needed to go to the vet twice in their life!

Useful tips. I have heard sad news about going to irresponsible vet and the pet get hurt or die. It is always worthy of spending more time to find a trustful vet.

It’s one thing to be an owner of pets, then comes the responsibility for seeing to it they are cared for properly. Thanks.

It is very difficult to find a good vet. I have been to 3 vet clinics and being on a island, there are only a handful. There was something about each that I liked…wish I could combine all of their qualities. Good article
