You might already have a 3-day kit for yourself and your human family members (and if you don’t, this is a great time to put one together), but do you have one for your pets? Here’s what you need.
- A critter carrier or leash. If your pet is in a cage, just use the cage. Otherwise, use whatever you would use to take the pet to the vet.
- If your pet doesn’t already wear a collar and tag, include a collar tagged with your phone number and the word “reward.” If you are separated from your pet during the emergency, this makes it more likely that your pet will get back to you. For pets that live in a cage, this can be put on their cage instead.
- Food. For cats and dogs, six small cans of canned food or meal-sized sealed bags of kibble. For other pets, three days’ worth of whatever they eat.
- Water. For small pets (no bigger than a housecat), three single-serving bottles of water will do. For larger pets, whatever amount of water you give them in a day, multiply by three.
- Food and water bowls.
- Toys and treats. These are not life or death items but it is kind to your pet to include a little something to lift its spirits.
- Bedding. For cats, small dogs, and other animals that will be kept in a carrier that doesn’t have woodchip-style bedding in the bottom, include three towels (one for each day). Accept the possibility of throwing these out as you go. Animals that live in cages can go three days with the same woodchips.
Put these things in a place that’s easy to get to. In or next to your “human” 3-day kit is a great place so you only have to remember one place to get things from.
