How to Choose The Perfect Kitten

If you plan to get the kids a kitty, you will want to choose a kitten that will be perfect for the family. Here are a few suggestions to get you on the right track. Of course, your first thought will be your families health. So check with the doctor if anyone has allergies or breathing problems. Many people in the US are allergic to animal dander. So check out all the angles, take your time, choose the perfect kitten and enjoy your new pet.

If your kids are clamoring for a kitten, here are some questions to ask yourself before agreeing to get one. The first question to ask is: Do any of the family have allergies? If the answer is yes, you probably will not want to complicate the situation with an animal dander. More than 10 million people in the US are allergic to animal dander. Do any of your family have breathing problems? If the answer is yes, again, you probably won’t want to make any more breathing difficulties for that family member.

Do you have other pets? Consider how they will get along with a new kitten? Do you have money for the upkeep of a kitten? Remember the cost is more than just for food. There will be the vet bill, litter, food, and in the event of an emergency the vet bill will not be cheap. It’s a good idea to have health insurance for your pets or at least a savings for that purpose.

Okay, If you got past all those obstacles it’s time to choose the best breed, and don’t choose your family kitty on looks alone. Some breeds are friendlier (Siamese) and some are prone to disease (Abyssinian). Talk to a vet and take their advise. They are qualified to give you the best advise available.

When you find one you think will work, if you can, bring it home for the day to see how active or peaceful it is before you commit. Most kittens are full of energy and are into everything they possibly can get into. It’s a good idea to get a kitten that’s at least 6 months old. By that time it’s personality is set and you know what you are getting.

It’s less expensive to go to a shelter and so many animals are without homes its a good thing to do. The fees will be from $75 to $150 and it will likely be spayed or neutered and vaccinated. To find adoptable cats in your area go to, petfinder.com. Some pet supply stores such as “Petsmart” also hold pet adoptions.
