Pet Sitting and Boarding

Pet sitting is utilized by pet owners for a variety of reasons – from vacation trips to working long hours and not wanting to leave their pet unattended. You can offer your pet sitting services from your home or out of the clients home. Familiarize yourself with the animal breed, special needs, medical needs, veterinary information, diet, exercise schedule, etc… before you start. Agree to a fee, schedule, and duty detail before you agree to take on any pet. It is always a good idea to carry insurance and get bonded if you are going to be entering the clients home to sit for the pet or giving the pet any type of medication.

Pet Writer

There are online, television, and print sectors that are looking for knowledgeable writers to provide material for fliers, magazines, how to guides, newsletters, television script, etc… Be sure your writing style is congruent to the desired writing style and that you have knowledge of the content desired by the job opening. A knowledge of a wide variety of animals is always helpful.

Small farms will often hire someone to walk, groom, water, feed, and muck out stalls. If you are a horse lover, but can not afford the upkeep of having one, then this may be an ideal job for you. Many farms will also exchange board for your horse in return for doing these duties for other horses.

Dog Walker

This is becoming very popular in urban areas where longer hours are often worked and residential outdoor space is a commodity. Be sure that you have emergency contact information in case of an accident while walking the dog. Agree to how and where you will walk the dog. You will also want to find out about any behavior problems before taking the dog out. Most dog walkers take the dog for an hour plus walk and take multiple dogs at one time. Some cities have laws regarding how many dogs you can walk at one time. It also helps to schedule alike sized and breed dogs in your time slots.

Pet Taxi

Again, very popular in urban areas. Long work hours may make it impossible for a pet owner to make time for grooming appointments, veterinary appointments , play date, etc… appointments. You need to make sure you have flexible hours and reliable transportation for this job.

Aquarium Maintenance

Many offices and businesses have aquariums, but do not have a knowledgeable staff member to maintain the tank and monitor water quality. You will need to have fresh and saltwater aquarium knowledge and knowledge of the species of fish you will be dealing with.

Pet Supplies Delivery

This job involves delivering the supplies, medications, food, etc… that the pet owner needs. You will go out and purchase the items that the owner needs and deliver it to the pets home or sitter.

Pet Photographer

Many professional photographers do not have a niche for pets. Neither do they do in the home photography. Same with sketch artist. Of course, you would need to have photography, painting, or drawing skills.

It is easy to advertise for these jobs at local groomers, vet offices, pet suppliers, pet stores, etc.. There are also job boards that are devoted to pet related jobs.

thanks for not telling people to work in pet stores. Although this seems like a good option – pet stores exploit pets for profit, the staff is working with the public to get sales. It is not a job for a real animal lover. However most shelters do hire staff and can always use volunteers too!
