I have a British Shorthair that I'm quite allergic to (I can't put my face too close to her fur or touch my eyes after stroking her - she also make me sneeze), and a Ragdoll, that I'm not allergic to at all. Ragdolls are long-haired so I don't know why this is but assume it's a similar idea to the protein difference you mentioned. It's very interesting, though. Anyway, you might want to add the Ragdoll to your cat list, since this is something I've read about several times elsewhere, so it must be the case for many people (and they're also so much cuter than the sphinx!).
