The Care of Cats

Cats are twice as likely as dogs to be fat. Most folks walk the dog but who walks a cat? If your cat is fat play with him with a teaser toy. Toll him around the house with the toy and get him a climbing pole at the pet store. The most important rule for a fat cat is, keep him exercising, don’t over feed him and limit or omit the table scraps.

Keep the litter box clean. If you have found a little gift or two, it’s because his litter box is dirty. Cats won’t use a dirty litter box.Don’t leave a mess in the box more than a day and scrub the box good a few times a year. A dirty litter box can actually be bad for a cat’s health. A cat won’t use a dirty litter box more than once a day and holding it in can cause a urinary blockage. If you have more than one cat put out a litter box for each cat.

Don’t use air freshners or potpourri around your cat. Don’t use perfumed litter either. It is toxic if your cat licks it. Use baking soda scented litter to prevent odors and always fill the box two thirds full of litter to prevent leakage into the plastic.

If you can afford pet insurance, get it. Cats are notorious for getting sick. Anything from intestinal issues, kidney infections to cancer. If you can’t afford insurance, start a sick cat fund. Put all your dollar bills in a jar for the vet.

Don’t think a cat obeys you when you yell at him. She is only learning not to do it in your presence. A cat can train you better than you can train a cat. As any veteran cat owner can tell you, if you have a cat, learn to live with it.
