Tips for Beginners on Pet Snake Care

Snakes have become very popular pets. Some people get them becuase they want something different. Before you buy a snake know what you are really getting. Burmese pythons are cute when they are small but will grow to be 30 feet long.

A snake is a great eye catching pet and they have become very popular.  They are exotic pets and they catch people’s interest.  They are usually very hardy and require a minimum of care.  Some basic mistakes that beginners make can be very costly.  There are some things you can do to insure that your snake stays healthy and happy.

You need to find out how big your snake will get when he is an adult.  Most North American snakes grow to be about 4 feet long.  When you are shopping for a snake do let someone at the pet store talk you into buying a Burmese python.  The pet stores usually have a lot of them and they will try to push them off on buyers that do not know anything about snakes except that they want one. They can grow to be over 30 feet long and they require huge cages and tremendous amount of food.

Do not skimp on your new snake’s cage size.  A cage that is too small will be very stressful and unhealthy for your snake.  Pet store clerks often will try to sell you a cage that is not big enough for the snake when he is an adult.  The snake needs a cage that is as big as he is long.  Snakes can grow rapidly so get a cage that will be big enough for him when he is grown.

Be sure to find out how docile the type of snake you are thinking about is.  Most American snakes are docile and easy to handle.

Make sure you select a snake that has a hearty appetite.  Ball pythons make great pets but they are notorious for being fussy eaters.  Corn snakes are great for beginners because they are very docile and are not fussy about what they eat.  It is sometimes good to ask for a feeding demonstration and then you will know is the snake will eat.

A reptile has the potential to spread salmonella but the risk is very small but you should still play it safe and wash every time you handle your snake.

These tips are just a few of the things you should do when you become a snake owner for the first time.  You should read as much as you can about the snake you have decided on and what its care requirements are.  Know your snake and take proper care of him and you will have a great pet.
