What Hamsters Eat

The right diet for your hamster is the most important thing to care about. Hamsters can easily get sick due to a wrong diet, they are very likely to suffer from diarrhea when not fed correctly.

Feeding a hamster is quite easy, as long as you remember some basic rules:

1. Hamsters originate from desert areas. That’s why you should feed juicy vegetables and fruits only in small amounts. You have to provide fresh water though! Replace the water daily.

2. Too much fat or even sugar will not only make your hamster fat, but also make him extremely unhealthy in general. Things that have a lot of fat are for example nuts or sunflower seeds. Those should be fed once or twice a month. When buying hamster food in a store, you should check the ingredients. Some companies add sugar to the cereals and that’s not good for your little friend. Also, hamster food with too many seeds is also not recommended. As mentioned before, they can make your hamster too fat.

Also be frugal with sweet fruits, e.g apples and pears. Small pieces are totally enough.

3. Before feeding veggies or fruits, you have to wash them with clean water. Hamsters are extremely sensitive towards pesticides.

4. Never give your hamster chocolate, chips or other junk food as a treat. Chocolate is even poisonous for hamsters!

5. Also, never feed cooked food as spices and especially salt can be harmful to your hamster.

If you follow these rules, your hamster will have a happy life together with you.

To sum up, the best things to feed your hamster with are:

Tomatoes, cucumber, broccoli, red or yellow bell pepper, banana, apple, pear, watermelon and hamster food with only few seeds and nuts.

Hi McKenzie, I do not think that this would be ok. When feeding hamster only with fruits and veggies, they will become sick. Feeding too much moist food will get them diarrhea. And they need some of the ingredients of grains to stay healthy and fit in general. Do you only want to eat veggies without any sauce and oil?

Paper is not soft enough for bedding unless it is toilet paper. It is ok for the nest, but not ok for the whole cage.

If you don’t have enough money to care for your hamster properly, please don’t get a hamster in the first place.
