Keeping Pets

The question as to why the cat has maintained such huge popularity as a companion remains unanswered. They cannot be trained as can dogs, they are not obedient, and their affections are reserved for when they see fit to give them, not when humans see fit to receive them. They maintain an aloof air of mystery which most humans cannot quite breach, and their elegance and independence sets them apart as being somewhat otherworldly.

We humans have kept cats as pets for thousands of years. At times we’ve also persecuted them quite mercilessly, often due to such superstitious beliefs as "a cat can suck the breath out of a baby" and "eating a cat’s brain will make you invisible".
